#1 - How do you plan to use your senior photos?
If you plan to ONLY use them in announcements, then perhaps you only need digitals. But, if you (or your parent) are considering giving them as gifts, consider a photographer that offers prints, framed prints, and other wall art products. These might seem extravagant, but when you have images that last for generations without fading, they’ll become treasured heirlooms.
Maybe you’d like to cap your senior year off with a meaningful memento? A photobook is just the thing – it’s portable and will generally include a LARGE selection of your images. Who doesn’t love looking through photo albums! But, not all photographers offer them, so if it’s interests you, you’ll want to look for a photographer that offers this service.
Of course, you can now do many of these yourself on websites like Shutterfly, but a professional photographer will have access to pro labs and products…and they have the expertise to make sure they are done RIGHT! Also – you’ll be busy with Senior Year – let someone else handle this task for you!
#2 - What vibe do you (or your senior) want in the portraits?
Playful or serious? Studious or athletic? “Model”-like or relaxed/casual? Take the vibe you want into consideration and discuss this with your photographer. Make sure your photographer is willing and excited about working with you (or your senior) to get the feel you both want.
#3 - Does your senior have a favorite past-time or important activity?
- Do you (or your senior) have a sport or activity that has been a big part of your high school experience?
- Do you have a particular place that is very meaningful (downtown Waxhaw, uptown Charlotte, a sports field at Marvin Ridge)?
- What are you planning to study or do after high school?
- Nice car you want to show off?
Any of these would add great personality to your senior photos! Discuss these with your senior photographer. In fact, your photographer should ASK you these things, so that they can get to know your Senior.
#4 - Are there any important dates or timelines you need to adhere to?
You’ll want to check with your school (Marvin Ridge, Cuthbertson, Parkwood, Weddington, etc) to make sure you have these on your calendar! Also, look carefully at your announcement supplier’s turnaround times. You don’t want to have to pay a rush fee!
A good rule of thumb is to plan your session at least one month prior to any deadlines - however, that is assuming two weeks for your photographer's editing.
#5 - How much can you budget for senior portraits?
Senior Portrait Sessions in the Waxhaw and Charlotte area can range from $100 to $1000! Big difference! Those prices reflect a great variety of services included, so compare carefully. Cheaper at the start doesn’t always mean the lowest total price point.
Points of comparison you might want to consider:
- Are sessions in a studio or on location? Do you have a preference?
- Does the fee include digital images (how many)?
- What about outfit changes or travel fees?
- Does the photographer offer any collection discounts or special services?
Some professional photographers keep their pricing all-inclusive and others allow you more flexibility.
I've opted to give my clients as much flexibility as possible! In order to do that, I have separated the session fee (starting at $75 for a simple Cap and Gown portrait) from any images/prints you might decide to order. I offer all products (digital and print) both “a la carte” and in cost-saving Collections (Collections start at $100). I'm happy to provide full pricing!
