Family Portraits - Planning your outfits!
Your session is booked, now what?! Time to think about WHAT you want to wear! It's not overly complicated, but you do want to give it some thought.
Coordinate but DON’T MATCH!
No need to be too “matchy-matchy”. Perhaps choose a 3-4 neutral colors as a base, and then have every person use those colors to coordinate their own outfit.
Consider the time of year for outdoor photos. Pinterest can be a great help for ideas! Here are some color scheme suggestions:
Fall Color Schemes – warm colors
Maroon and Brown
Tan and Denim
Cream, Navy, Tan
Denim, Crimson, Yellow
Winter Color Schemes – cool colors, sparkle
Glitter and White
Crimson and Navy
Crimson, Tan, Blue
Grey, Black, Red
Green, Rose, Copper
Spring Color Schemes – soft colors
White and Blush
Teal and Blush
White, Tan, Light Blue
White, Navy, Yellow
Summer Color Schemes – vibrant colors
Teal and Orange
White and Tan
Green, Yellow, Blue
White, Tan, Light Blue
When in doubt - Neutrals
Neutral colors are always a great option, not only because they go well together, but because they are classic. Matching outfits in colors such as grey, tan, cream, blue, lighter browns, white are also great.
Other Tips:
- Be careful with patterns. While you don’t need to avoid patterns completely, keep them simple. And consider having only one person wearing a print.
- Be careful with horizontal stripes – they draw the eye to width and can appear to make a person’s figure wider, too.
- Avoid logos, slogans, or characters on clothes.
- Have either a fresh coat of nail polish on your nails or don’t have any nail polish on at all. You do not want chipped nail polish in your pictures!
- Wear makeup even if you don’t normally. At the very least, use a tinted moisturizer and a little mascara. This will help even your skin tone and make your eyes pop a little bit.
- Make sure underclothes are hidden, not showing through or peeking out of clothes.
- Don't wait until the last minute to put your clothing together. You don’t want to be unhappy with the photos because of your clothing choices!
But most important – COMFORT!
We want everyone to feel their best and be comfortable, so that they will enjoy themselves! Happy people make happy pictures.
Consider whether family members can move around freely while still looking good in their outfits. Wear what makes you feel confident and comfortable!
